Tips on the Top Online DVD Rental Memberships
If you love movies, but hate due dates and running to and from the video store, an online DVD rental service may be for you. Online DVD services allow you to browse, rent and return movies whenever you want, without leaving home. Renting online also means that the selection of films is much wider than the store around the corner, and the search tools much smarter. Plus, most offer free, two-way shipping, and don’t charge late fees. The question is which service and membership is the best deal? There are tons of different plans to suit different DVD rental styles, whether you’re a casual renter, a consistent movie connoisseur, or an extreme film enthusiast. Here’s a breakdown of the top three plans to get the most DVD rentals for your dollar:
1. Netflix – Ranked number one by Techcrunch, Netflix has 35 shipping centers across the U.S. and offers the fastest shipping times, an average of around a day. Since their merger with Walmart DVD rentals, they offer more than 70,000 titles, separated into 18 different genres and 246 subgenres. There are five different plans, ranging from US$4.99/month for two DVDs, one at a time to $23.99/month for an unlimited number of rentals, four at a time. The Netflix site offers movie previews, critical reviews, a 2-week free trial offer of any membership, and top-notch customer service. Plus, it’s got a great search tool. You can search by title, actor, director, studio, genre, decade, new releases, by critic and customer recommendation, and by awards movies have received. When you search for an actor or a director, the site provides you with a photo, a brief bio and career information. There's also a list of all the movies that person has been involved in that are available for rent through Netflix.
2. Blockbuster’s Total Access – This is one of the few online rental services that rent XBox, PlayStation 2 and Game Cube video games, and allow you to split rental choices between DVDs and video games. There are over 65,000 titles to choose from, divided into 18 different genres and 193 subcategories. You can search by title, actor, director, new releases, MPAA film rating, award winners, and even women in film. The site also has critic reviews, and if you like a movie you can purchase it directly from the site. You can try any of Blockbuster’s three membership options for free for two weeks: $9.99/month for unlimited one at a time rentals; $14.99/month for unlimited rentals, two at a time; and $17.99/month for unlimited rentals, three at a time. The drawbacks: with only 23 shipping centers across the U.S., delivery times tend to be longer (from one to three days), and even though there is no penalty for returning movies late, each rental comes with a "date to be returned by”.
3. QuikFliks - QwikFliks Entertainment Rentals Inc. gives you access to more than 28,000 different DVD titles, has no due dates and no late rental fees. They also offer the highest number of rental plan options, from $8.49/month for two DVDs, one at a time; to $23.95/month for 12 DVDs, four at a time. You can join on a monthly basis, and cancel your subscription at any time. Search capabilities are above average; categories include title, actor or director, New Releases, Hot Titles, Coming Soon, Award Winners and Family Titles. The site does not have reviews or previews, and there is no free trial and there tend to be longer delivery times (two to five days) because they are based exclusively out of California.

Saving money is great, but keeping the local mom and pop video shops alive is also important. My local one has a dollar day every Tuesday for all films, including new releases.
Also, Blockbuster often edits movies from their original. I don't need corporate mind police, do you?
Why deal with the hassles of the above players. Try redbox.com. Recent release DVD's for one dollar a night. Can be reserved online. Available at grocery stores and Mac Donalds. Try it. You'll never go back.
I would strongly recommend you check out peerflix.com. If you are not a consistent heavy movie watcher it is definitely the more cost effective alternative.
What is not mentioned is that blockbuster's plan also allows you to return it to the store.
Here in Europe, just about everybody downloads the movies incl. pretheatrical DVD Screeners in DivX / Xvid via torrents or rapidshare. Widespread legal (fee based) online delivery is just a matter of time.
