Find a Lawyer
Businesses need a lawyer. You need them to deal with contracts, to advise you on whether to organize your business as a corporation or a limited liability company, to help you with leases, and to register your business for federal and state tax ID numbers, among other things.
Here are some suggestions on how to assure that you have found the best lawyer for your business.
1) Make sure to get a specialist. While this may at first seem more expensive, a specialist will be more efficient and save you time and money.
2) Don’t hire a lawyer who approaches you. Get referrals from friends and lawyers, and perform background checks. Use the American Bar Association’s website, or use a commercial service like FindLaw to find an attorney in your area.
3) Use the free consultation as an interview. Ask the lawyer about his experience working with businesses in general and more specifically, businesses like yours. Discuss fees and how he or she bills.
4) Make sure you’re comfortable with your lawyer. Go with your instinct, and be sure to meet with the lawyer who will actually be handling your work.
