Make Your Fast Food Healthier
We are busy people, so busy that we don’t even have time to sit in restaurants and have people cook for us let alone cook for ourselves. The solution: drive thru windows. You don’t even have to get out of your car. You buy your food on your way from point A to point B and eat as you run your errands. Unfortunately, the result has been an obese America.
Recently, Americans have become more health conscious, and fast food chains have been responding with healthier alternatives. Here are some tips on how to eat fast food, minimize calories and maximize nutrition.
First of all, don’t super-size. Obviously, a really big burger has more fat and calories than a smaller one. You can reduce the size of the regular portions by sharing or ordering a children’s meal.
Avoid cheese, mayonnaise and sauces that are high in calories. Put salsa on your burrito or mustard on your burger instead.
Don’t order soda. Juice is a nutritional alternative if the chain sells real juice. (Otherwise it’s basically non-carbonated soda.) Buy water or low fat milk instead.
Maximize the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat with your meal. Ask for extra tomatoes on your burger, and order a side of fresh fruit instead of French fries.
Don’t assume that chicken is healthier than red meat. Try to order food that is grilled instead of fried. Many chains post their nutritional information making it easier to plan a healthier meal. Check out the nutritional content of some of your favorite fast food dishes here.
