Lower energy costs during the holidays, Part II
The less you adorn your home with electricity-thirsty decorations the better off you will be. Attempt to use fewer strings of lights outdoors with simpler design patterns, and put them up later and take them down earlier. They should never burn for more than six hours a day. Use a timer so you won’t forget to turn them off at night. And why not turn the regular lights off and enjoy the soft glow of the indoor holiday lights instead?
Finally, look around for alternative decorations that don’t require electricity. Candles for example look elegant in windows, and when placed in brown paper bags with sand to weigh the bag down, you can light up your walkway, front porch or balcony without ever nearing an electric socket. Also, look around for recycled or energy-free decorations like ribbons and wreaths that decorate stairways or lampposts nicely.
