Profile

Marc H. Gerstein is an independent consultant specializing in rules-based equity investing strategies.

He is presently working with Portfolio123.com, a platform professional and individual investors can use to develop and backtest stock screening and ranking strategies, to simulate real-world performance, and maintain portfolios based on the user’s rules. He also works with Ariston Advisors, a registered investment advisor that focuses on rules-based portfolios such as the Reuters Select models created in the past by Mr. Gerstein, and model portfolios created by Value Engine.

Gerstein’s models cover all major investment styles (growth, value, quality and sentiment). They reach beyond the obvious choices investors hear about in the news and search far and wide for companies (whether widely publicized or little known) demonstrating objective measure of fundamental and/or technical excellence.

In the past, Gerstein worked as a securities analyst and over the course of nearly two decades, at Value Line, where he analyzed stocks across a wide variety of industries and sectors including Household Products, Specialty Retail, Restaurant, Mining, Energy, Hotel/Gaming, Homebuilding, Airlines, Railroads and Media and also served as Assistant Research Director. During the mid-to late-1980s, he managed Value Line’s high-yield corporate bond mutual fund. He joined Reuters' Market Guide in February 1999 as Director of Investment Research and continued in that role after Market Guide was acquired by Multex (2000) and again as Multex was acquired by Reuters (2003). He authored two books on stock screening: Screening The Market (Wiley, 2002) and The Value Connection (Wiley, 2003).
