  • More Thoughts on Mohamed El-Erian's 'When Markets Collide'
"That said, this decline is not so bad for those with truly well diversified portfolios."

No Geoff and it has not taken me much to have a portfolio of a few mutual funds to have anywhere from a few percent plus to a few percent minus without so many different asset classes. Only took a fixed income position of around 35% and 10% cash and rest mostly equities. Why so many asset classes, seems to me it is not necessary to complicate asset allocation for the average investor.

  • Thoughts on Mohamed El-Erian's 'When Markets Collide'
I thought I was being smart by adding alternative asset allocation class mutual fund to my portfolio but what I am seeing is when market is up alternative class is down more than it is up when market is down. Is that supposed to be?

  • Defining a Set of Core Asset Classes
    Hi Geoff,

I have mostly managed mutual funds with managers I find are some of the best, Evillard, Leuthold, Romick, McGregor, Rudolph-Riad Younes, Royce, Cuggino. I don't own any bonds or bond funds except those in the funds I own. Can those bonds serve as my allocation to bonds? If I have 40-50% bonds from those mutual funds, can they be considered my bond allocation? I am 75 and only recently retired.

It seems that commodities have disrupted any benefit, in the short term, at least. How can this be prevented?

  • Commodities: Though Hit Hard Recently, Bulls May Yet Return
"Key commodities are near significant support levels (e.g. $110/barrel for oil and $860 for gold), which we suspect will hold"

Well, so much for that prediction, at least for today, 8/17/2008, now $788.

  • Bond Expert: Monday Wrap
"The plunge in the price of commodities has wreaked havoc and carnage on the TIPS market. In the 10 year sector the spread has narrowed to 220 points from a wide of about 260 basis points."

Is this a reason to avoid or buy now?
