  • Each Time I See Google's Android Pitch I Like It Less and Less
Does Google even have a Customer Service department? I use Grandcentral, which was bought by Google, and there's no way to contact Google if you have a problem. Their forums are virtually useless, and unmonitored. I couldn't update the list of phones I wanted my GC number to call for a week.

On Google's finance forums, the level of spam is horrific. Try searching for some of Sumer's posts. They are vile, and yet, Google keeps letting this person post. I understand 1st Amendment rights, but this person is seriously deranged. Is anyone monitoring Google's finance forums?

Gmail goes offline every once in a while, with little comment from Google.

Does the fact that everything they release is "beta" give them carte blanche to not provide any customer support?

If they take this hands-off approach to Android apps, they are going to have a big problem.

  • Was the iPhone Deal Worth It for AT&T?
LOL, to the people who don't want AT&T to invest in future growth, I guess the only answer is to NOT subsidize phones, or maybe they'd prefer AT&T sign up fewer iPhone subscribers.

  • The Google Phone: Blockbuster or Bust?
Google is self-serving. Its desire for openness is also in line with its desire to keep its search engine, and how it makes money, at the top of the heap. If Windows Mobile were to win in the mobile device market, then Windows could lock out Google from the next great platform.

You wrote, "Google is positioning itself against Apple, which has bet on the iPhone's "locked" handset model -- available only through AT&T (T). In contrast, Google has championed an "open" model, not only by basing Android on open-source technology, but also in its successful effort to open up the 700Mhz wireless spectrum auctioned off by the F.C.C."

This is so wrong. Google is aligning with Apple in a loose WebKit alliance supporting webstandards, against MS and proprietary ones. You do realize that Android and Chrome are built on WebKit. Adobe Air is also built on WebKit. Nokia's S60 is also built on WebKit. Safari is also built on WebKit. Guess who makes WebKit?

Yep, you guessed it, Apple. Apple makes the rendering engine, powering all of those browsers and browser-based Apps. Apple released WebKit back to the open-source community.

  • Apple's 3G iPhone: Q4 Sales Estimates Are Encouraging
I would think having 1 M iPhones in the channel should help as well. If you think about it, the runrate is about 1M a month, and Apple usually keeps about 4 to 6 weeks of inventory on hand, so that means 1M in the channel, and that's counted as sold.

  • Did Apple Manufacture a First-Day iPhone Shortage?
One, I imagine that Apple based delivery upon sales of the initial iPhone rollout.

Two, it's quite possible that Apple wanted the AT&T store to have stock on its first two days, limiting sales on Day 1 in order to have some stock on Day 2. Perhaps, the store was scheduled for a new shipment on Day 3. That way the store has inventory every day.

During the initial rollout, Apple was restocking Apple stores on a daily basis. But with AT&T's many smaller stores, it may be on a less frequent basis. Also, the phones may actually have to go thru an AT&T warehouse first, and then get distributed, requiring more time between shipments. Plenty of possible reasons for how things get distributed.

  • Could iPhone Subsidies Be Apple’s Ticket to Mainstream USA?
This rumor was started by Scott Moritz. He is a well-known fudster, who has tried to drive down Apple sales and its stock price before. His goal is to get people to delay purchases, you know, the Osborne effect, in order to drive down the stock. He uses his relationship with TheStreet.com and Jim Cramer to accomplish his goal. Recall that he was the one that made up the story that Apple's goal was to sell 1 million iPhones on its first weekend of sales. Of course, we all know that to be garbage as Apple never shipped 1 million iPhones for first weekend distribution. Nevertheless Scott Moritz never explained nor apologized for his FUD.

  • Apple's AT&T Deal Is Costly
Okay, so I looked at your May blog post, and noticed how you cherrypicked your good calls, and ignore your bad ones. In your blog, you also clipped out that Motorola would be a sleeper pick. How's that Motorola looking now? Now, I know that was not your call, but you reprinted that, in addition to the comments on AT&T and RIM. One can only assume that you liked that call too; otherwise, why include it?

  • Apple's AT&T Deal Is Costly
There are NO lost revenues for unlocked phones in countries where Apple has no official carrier. There are some lost revenues for unlocked phones in countries where Apple has an official carrier. For example, if someone unlocks their phone to use on the T-Mobile network; however, even those phones might not be lost revenue, because presumably, those customers are using T-Mobile because they get better wireless coverage than from AT&T.

In addition, Apple is not like other mfrs who need the subsidy from the wireless carrier to turn a profit on a phone. Apple is making a profit on each and every phone it sells, locked or unlocked. In other words, there's no downside to additional phones being sold, except in analysts' and bloggers' minds.

Now, in the very same article, you damn Apple for not collecting revenue on tons of unlocked phones, and also damn Apple for not selling thru every carrier. Logic says, that both issues cannot be true at the same time. If so many phones are being unlocked to use on other carriers, where's the impediment from not selling on every carrier?

As for the gPhone, you do know that Google has constantly stated that no such phone exists or is being planned? And, Google's actions speak louder than bloggers' words. Google has constantly talked about how the iPhone has been an eyeopener for them in terms of mobile websearch. Google's OHA is intended to expand the mobile websearch market, downward, and not necessarily compete with the iPhone in the upper end of the market. Whatever.

You do realize that Apple's approach had little to do with hubris and more to do with their being a new entrant in the market, where carriers dictated terms and features on handsets. In order to break this mindset, Apple had to give AT&T an exclusive, and they got some groundbreaking terms, like a share of the carrier revenue, and visual voicemail, and their portal being the gateway and not AT&T. Honestly, I don't know where you bloggers get your ideas. Perhaps, it's the hubris of trying to pat yourself on the back.

I sold my Apple shares at $197.50 and $201.50, after getting in at $86, last Feb. I guess I should pat myself on the back too!
