Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.
- Oil demand withers. The International Energy Agency warned Friday worldwide oil demand...
Chinese Stock Market Bottoms: What Should U.S. Investors Do?
It is hard to be bullish about solar with fossil fuel prices in free fall. But you have to remember: in a year or two after we traverse the bottom of the recession, oil will again become fairly priced and we will WANT solar electricity instead of expensive $4 gasoline.
Apple Investors: Fasten Your Seatbelts, Put On Helmets
People differ about politics. I happen to be of the Obama camp. But two things are clear: 1) the war has not paid for itself. Iraq supposedly has 79 billion in the bank and I DON'T see them at this time repaying us for all the money we sank into the war, right or wrong. I hope the next administration addresses this. 2) The regulators were ASLEEP to allow the bank/mortgage crisis to occur. I ASSUME that most of the said regulators were "Bushies" because he's been in office nearly 8 years.
Apple Investors: Fasten Your Seatbelts, Put On Helmets
As for Apple: if you need a laotop; you need a laptop and they are the ONLY company that has product worthy of owning. This makes them SOMEWHAT recession-resistant, assuming the economy doesn't sink from recession to Depression.
Under The Radar News - Friday
Nowadays dual booting, for full speed Windows is a very viable option for people nervous about going "cold turkey". I
Google to Challenge Baidu in China With Free Music
Interesting. Didn't US courts rule a number of years ago that Napster DID infinge by merely linking? Looks like, in this case, the Chinese courts are less clueless.
Any idea what kind of music the Chinese listen to? Britney Spears? Communist work songs? Same mix as everybody else?
Under The Radar News - Friday
Even IBM couldn't be THAT dumb, to buy AMD.
"Interesting that Walt Mossberg, a huge apple fan, gave it a very mediocre review"
Mossberg's a "lawful neutral" (to use D&D jargon); not a huge Apple fan. The MacBook Air is for road warriors ONLY. I'm not in that group, either.
iPhone shortfall: I think they'll make the 10M by the end of 2008 without breaking a sweat. But, they need to hit additional markets. Note Nokia did well by tapping Asia, EU, and Latin America; the iPhone is still mostly US.
Google, Schmoogle. In China, Baidu's Better
