  • Global Markets, Meet President Obama. Now What?
The infamous Mainstream Media marketed Obama like a new soap product. They deliberately suppressed serious information concerning his previously stated beliefs. They published snarky stories on Sarah Palin. They had better pray that concealed Obama does not emerge. If it does, how will they explain to the gullible, naive public? The great danger is that in selling "Hope and Change" is that if the "change" is worse than the past, "hope" will be discarded and cynicism will take its' place.

  • Why a Psychological Bottom Will Lag Any Real Recovery
There is one aspect that the posters on this thread are overlooking. The Social Security System also pays modest stipends to disabled and mentally retarded folks, as well as certain people with chronic mental illness. I have no beef with this because many of these people would be in very dire straits otherwise. But what rots my socks is that this enormous welfare system is NOT paid into by government employees such as members of Congress, Congressional employees and, yes, employees of the Social Security System: "We have our Own retirement system"!! As far as I am aware, only the military, of all federal employees, pay into Social Security. Congress has traditionally screwed, blued, and tatooed the rest of the populace. Congress has exempted itself from OSHA, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, etc. They just gave themselves another stealth pay raise the other day. I believe it was Mark Twain who observed that Congress was the only original criminal class to emerge in the U.S.

  • Environmentalism May Face Major Setback in 2009
I consider myself to be an environmentalist. I support the revival of light rail and streetcars. We have composted our household garbage for more than thirty years. We have a solar water heater that is saving at least $50 a month in electricity. I rode a bicycle to and from work most days of the week for 19 years. Our large backyard is a small farm , producing fruits and vegetables. I took a grandchild to an Elderhostel in 2002 at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. I asked some staff members at the Lowell Observatory what they thought of the Global Warming idea. They told me the orbit of the Earth around the Sun and the varying output of the Sun was the main driver of temperature on Earth. I am paranoid about the Utopians who want to capture the economy and society. They strike me as fanatics who would control our every act.

  • Exploring Madoff's Ponzi Scheme Will Unveil the Causes of This Global Monetary Crisis
This is a stunning analysis. But I despair of any solutions or remedies. BOTH political parties have been corrupted and the big coverup is now underway. We need term limits for congress and it should be a criminal offense for any former congressman to lobby for ANYTHING!

  • The Economic Meltdown: Dismantling, Yes; Doom, No
I completely concur with RCA's outstanding comments. The author confuses his political opinions with economic analysis. Too bad we can't recall the war in Iraq and then replay history to see what the consequences would have been.

  • I Would Be More Worried About Global Cooling
One of the current global warming gurus published a book in 1977 entitled:"The Coming Ice Age". At about that same time, Newsweek magazine, a great contrarian predictor, also trumpeted global cooling on its' cover. My concern is that totalitarian utopians (remember the USSR?) have been reborn as the global warming movement. "Just give us total control of your society and all will be well!"

  • Gas Prices Will Go Up with a Fury
I have been investing in energy for more than thirty years. I would welcome a viable set of alternatives to petroleum but it seems to me to be somewhere between 10 and 30 years away from happening. I am appalled at the head in the sand attitude in Congress regarding the securing of domestic sources of petroleum supplies.

  • United Socialist States of America? Not Quite
I found the author's description of the questioning reporter to be very revealing. My take is that the reporter was asking the poster to bad mouth the U.S. Certainly, the U.S. has many flaws and has made many mistakes but mainstream journalists seem to be obsessed with finding fault with, and criticizing the U.S.

  • U.S. Dollar: The Trade of the Decade
I sure would like to believe this scenario. But I fear the author has been smoking the really, really good stuff. I fail to see the basis behind the idea that the "assets" purchased by Bernanke and the Fed will turn out to be profitable. When I contemplate the fiscal recklessness of Congress and several presidents, I fear for the future of my grandchildren.

  • Risk of Long Term Deflation Is Low but Growing
Kudos to jlounsbury59 for a clear headed explanation of the mess we are in. What astonishes me is that Alan Greenspan was once a devotee of Ann Rand of all people!! Our oldest son, who is an accountant and an attorney, says that Greenspan had his head turned by the elite establishment and they blew smoke rings up his lower digestive tract!

  • Will Obama's Economic Policies Drag the U.S. Down?
All these Obama apologists seem to have forgotten the important role the Carter and Clinton administrations played in making banks loan to unqualified home buyers. Long serving members of Congress ,such as Barney Frank, "Kerosene" Maxine Waters, and Chris Dodd ran interference for Fannie and Freddie as they were running the Ponzi scheme. The ineffectual Bush administration made several failed attempts to rein in this excess , to no avail. Unfortunately for Obama! supporters, the public has a short and shallow memory, Six to 18 months into the coming debacle, the public will angrily want to know where is the "hope" and "change".

  • The Honeymoon Is Over: Gauging the Market with an Obama Presidency
I am with LongOil. I hope Obama! is successful, for all our sakes, but I fear he is a suntanned version of Jimmy Carter. Obama! is about to find that there is no longer a "present" button in the Oral, er Oval, Office. He will have to chose from among only Hobson's Choices. It is going to be an interesting four years. I only hope we survive it.

  • Why "Drill, Baby, Drill!" Does Not Translate Into Effective National Energy Policy
I have to second the ideas of Huangjin and HappyCajun. Nancy Pelosi, who recently was quoted as "saving the planet" has let the cat out of the bag. She voted against the ANWAR drilling resolution in 1996 and Bill Clinton vetoed it, saying it would be ten years before we got any oil. Well, it is now TWELVE years and and we are still degrading our currency by buying oil from countries who hate our guts. For the benefit of other posters and readers, I rode a bicycle to work, 3 to 6 days a week, for the last 19 years of my full time employment. We have composted our household garbage for at least 30 years. We have a very efficient solar water heater that is saving us at least 50 dollars a month. I was an early contributor to Green Peace until I began paying close attention to their material. The author may not be a member of what I call the "greenie conspiracy" but there is a significant element of the green movement that would drastically cut the world population and take us back to the 18th. century with sail, animal, and human power as the sole means of transportation. This group are really neo-fascists who seek to remove national sovereignty in favor of "world government". If you want to know how that will work, just look at the current U.N. Lest you think I am a nut case, log onto "the Green Agenda". I have fought urban sprawl all my life. In 1962-65 I taught at a college in upstate New York and road bus transportation almost every day. Yes, Europeans do have very good public transportation systems, but in my frequent trips to Europe in the past , I saw almost empty buses and rail cars, (except at rush hour), and the Euros do like their cars.I see natural gas as the logical fuel for heavy trucks, busses, and taxis. I would be delighted to have alternative fuels for vehicles but there has to be a transition for technical and infrastructure development. Lastly< I would place an import tax on all hydrocarbons for outside North America and Columbia. The tax should be rigidly tied to development of alternative energy.
