  • Houston to Obama: Smell the Oil
I have read this extended exchange with fascination. Full disclosure: I will soon be 79 years old and have been a registered Republican since changing sides in 1954. Although I am clearly a beneficiary of the legislation which has favored the "old geezers". I am worried about the burden that will be placed on our 8 grand children, ranging in age from 25 years to 8 months. I see the government in Washington and in the state capitols as seriously corrupt. The legislature in my home state of Florida provides free healthcare for all members and their families. ( the president of the state senate allegedly has net worth of 6 million) But the Florida legislature has told everybody that budgets for mental health, education, etc. will have to be cut because of tax shortfalls. Funny thing, there are Democrats in that Legislature but I don't see them insisting the legislature give up free healthcare for the solons. Without term limits, a member of a legislature can return again and again and gain committee chairmanships and POWER. Then special interests colonize the legislator and that person no longer represents their supposed constituents, but the special interests. I have seen this happen again and again with both Republicans and Democrats. We desperately need a term limits amendment to the Constitution since the Supremes ruled state enacted limits "unconstitutional... far as OBAMA! is concerned,if you are not a subscriber to the WEEKLY STANDARD, got to the library and get the August 11 issue. Page 24 to 32 contains a very unemotional, factual article that covers Obama in his own words and actions in Chicago and the Illinois legislature. Obama comes across as the most radicl serious candidate for president in our history. Further he seems to speak with a forked tongue.Compare the quotations from his speech to the Democratic Convention in 2004 with what he said at various times and places in Illinois. He is truly flying under false colors( no pun intended). I will hold my nose and vote for McCain just like I voted for him in the primary. Sadly, our choices for president all my life have seemed to boil down to picking the "evil of the two lessers"
