  • Cheap Crude: A Flash in the (Oil) Pan
I concur completely with Mr. Fitzsimmons. I don't know what they have been smoking at WSJ, but it must be really good stuff. George Bush might have been a hero if he had advocated an import tax on hydrocarbon imports from outside North America, but including Columbia( friendly nation that desperately needs our help). This tax should have been STRICTLY committed to developing alternative sources of energy and local sources of petroleum energy. I don't know how old Oster is, but he has a lot of rude learning ahead. A steep rise in oil prices is very much closer. Present prices jeopardize production in high cost, but nearby and dependable sources, in Canada. PGM group metals mines are closing down because they cannot afford to produce at present prices. "High prices cure high prices and low prices cures low prices". Any rational market has to balance cost and price.Any future supply of oil is going to be more costly, and difficult, to produce. We need to have a redundant energy system using wind, geothermal, nuclear, and biofuels. Hydrogen seems as far away as cold fusion. One final comment: George Soros scares the nitrogenous waste product out of me.

  • Why "Drill, Baby, Drill!" Does Not Translate Into Effective National Energy Policy
I have to second the ideas of Huangjin and HappyCajun. Nancy Pelosi, who recently was quoted as "saving the planet" has let the cat out of the bag. She voted against the ANWAR drilling resolution in 1996 and Bill Clinton vetoed it, saying it would be ten years before we got any oil. Well, it is now TWELVE years and and we are still degrading our currency by buying oil from countries who hate our guts. For the benefit of other posters and readers, I rode a bicycle to work, 3 to 6 days a week, for the last 19 years of my full time employment. We have composted our household garbage for at least 30 years. We have a very efficient solar water heater that is saving us at least 50 dollars a month. I was an early contributor to Green Peace until I began paying close attention to their material. The author may not be a member of what I call the "greenie conspiracy" but there is a significant element of the green movement that would drastically cut the world population and take us back to the 18th. century with sail, animal, and human power as the sole means of transportation. This group are really neo-fascists who seek to remove national sovereignty in favor of "world government". If you want to know how that will work, just look at the current U.N. Lest you think I am a nut case, log onto "the Green Agenda". I have fought urban sprawl all my life. In 1962-65 I taught at a college in upstate New York and road bus transportation almost every day. Yes, Europeans do have very good public transportation systems, but in my frequent trips to Europe in the past , I saw almost empty buses and rail cars, (except at rush hour), and the Euros do like their cars.I see natural gas as the logical fuel for heavy trucks, busses, and taxis. I would be delighted to have alternative fuels for vehicles but there has to be a transition for technical and infrastructure development. Lastly< I would place an import tax on all hydrocarbons for outside North America and Columbia. The tax should be rigidly tied to development of alternative energy.

  • Oil: The Inconvenient Truth
In 1977 a book entitled: "The Coming Ice Age" was published. It is alleged that the author is now one of the gurus of the global warming movement. I confess to having very wary feelings about this issue. Too many advocates of global warming strike me as being utopians. Religious wars have killed millions, but utopians have killed even more. I don't trust people who offer to perfect mankind.

  • Houston to Obama: Smell the Oil
I have read this extended exchange with fascination. Full disclosure: I will soon be 79 years old and have been a registered Republican since changing sides in 1954. Although I am clearly a beneficiary of the legislation which has favored the "old geezers". I am worried about the burden that will be placed on our 8 grand children, ranging in age from 25 years to 8 months. I see the government in Washington and in the state capitols as seriously corrupt. The legislature in my home state of Florida provides free healthcare for all members and their families. ( the president of the state senate allegedly has net worth of 6 million) But the Florida legislature has told everybody that budgets for mental health, education, etc. will have to be cut because of tax shortfalls. Funny thing, there are Democrats in that Legislature but I don't see them insisting the legislature give up free healthcare for the solons. Without term limits, a member of a legislature can return again and again and gain committee chairmanships and POWER. Then special interests colonize the legislator and that person no longer represents their supposed constituents, but the special interests. I have seen this happen again and again with both Republicans and Democrats. We desperately need a term limits amendment to the Constitution since the Supremes ruled state enacted limits "unconstitutional... far as OBAMA! is concerned,if you are not a subscriber to the WEEKLY STANDARD, got to the library and get the August 11 issue. Page 24 to 32 contains a very unemotional, factual article that covers Obama in his own words and actions in Chicago and the Illinois legislature. Obama comes across as the most radicl serious candidate for president in our history. Further he seems to speak with a forked tongue.Compare the quotations from his speech to the Democratic Convention in 2004 with what he said at various times and places in Illinois. He is truly flying under false colors( no pun intended). I will hold my nose and vote for McCain just like I voted for him in the primary. Sadly, our choices for president all my life have seemed to boil down to picking the "evil of the two lessers"

  • Crude Sell-off: Solid Entry Point into U.S. Oil Majors
I have been investing energy since 1980. Investors seem to be like a herd of Wildebeastes(spelling?... panicking at the first smell of a lion. The fundamental issues on energy are still in place and aren't going to change as long as the "Greenies" are able to control the Democrats and many Republicans. Bill Clinton vetoed a Republican resolution authorizing drilling in ANWAR in 1996, saying it would be ten years until any gas or oil was produced.Well, here we are 12 years later and the "DemoGreenies&quo... are still singing the same song. The Greenies want to bomb us back to the Stone Age, or at least the 17th. Century when all people and goods moved by wind, animal power or foot power. I have a solar water heater that has been saving me $50.00 a month in electricity since 2002. I am perfectly willing to embrace solar, wind, and all other alternatives. But we have to get from here to that great day with an intelligent energy policy. The Greenies don't want us to use "dirty oil" from the Canadian tar sands. They don't seem to understand if they get their way, we will be facing anarchy and revolution. When Green Peace first came out, I was an early contributor. Then I read their material and concluded they were NUTS!. We need more realists in Washington rather than utopians. I don't know how you accomplish that as long as politicians can use public money to buy votes. In the meantime, Those dirty, greedy oil companies ain't going away!!

  • The T. Boone Pickens Approach
I have to endorse the opinion of user 141176 enthusiastically. My wife and I have been composting our household garbage for more than 30 years. We have a solar water heater on our roof that has been saving at least $50 a month for the last six years. I rode a bicycle to and from work 3 to 5 days a week for the last 19 years I was employed. But I am an agnostic about this man made global warming hypothesis.Conservatio... has its own virtues and rewards. But I am deeply suspicious of Utopians who seem eager to seize control of society "for our own good". I seem to recall that happening in Russia in 1917. By the way, did Al Gore ever ride a bike to work when he was a U.S. Senator? I didn't expect him to use a bike as Vice President but he has always seemed to me to act more like a Crown Prince than an ordinary human.
