  • Why a Psychological Bottom Will Lag Any Real Recovery
There is one aspect that the posters on this thread are overlooking. The Social Security System also pays modest stipends to disabled and mentally retarded folks, as well as certain people with chronic mental illness. I have no beef with this because many of these people would be in very dire straits otherwise. But what rots my socks is that this enormous welfare system is NOT paid into by government employees such as members of Congress, Congressional employees and, yes, employees of the Social Security System: "We have our Own retirement system"!! As far as I am aware, only the military, of all federal employees, pay into Social Security. Congress has traditionally screwed, blued, and tatooed the rest of the populace. Congress has exempted itself from OSHA, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, etc. They just gave themselves another stealth pay raise the other day. I believe it was Mark Twain who observed that Congress was the only original criminal class to emerge in the U.S.

I hate to say it, but your predictions have plausibility written all over them. I recall the alleged Chinese curse: "may you live in interesting times"!

  • Why I See Long-Term Deflation
I like prudentinvestor's analysis. The only thing he left out is the word: "stagflation"... which is ,unfortunately, the worst of both worlds. It seems like almost all grocery items we purchase in the stores are higher. The local electric utility has won a 25% increase in its' base rate ,effective January 1. I believe the price of motor fuel is going back up in the coming year because actual production costs, for many producers, are higher than current market prices and producers will simply shut down. The bottom line: The standard of living for most of us will fall for some time.

  • U.S. Dollar: The Trade of the Decade
I sure would like to believe this scenario. But I fear the author has been smoking the really, really good stuff. I fail to see the basis behind the idea that the "assets" purchased by Bernanke and the Fed will turn out to be profitable. When I contemplate the fiscal recklessness of Congress and several presidents, I fear for the future of my grandchildren.

  • Historic Post-Crash Market Returns: How Will This Crash Fare?
Jake: did your calculations include dividends? I have read elsewhere that when the market bottomed in 1932, dividend paying stocks were yielding 8 to 9%, considering the deflation at the time, that dividend return would have been awesome.

  • What the Hedge Funds' Bad September Could Mean for Markets
This post is certainly consistent with my take on naked shorting. It seems to me if you sell something you don't own, you re committing FRAUD. I have read that some of these short sales are more than 200 days overdue for settlement. If true, this is PIRACY! I am going to e-mail Porter Stansberry and tell him to read this post, since he is such a big fan of all kinds of shorting.

  • The U.S. on the Precipice
Many of the responders to this post seem eager to blame all of this mess on "King George". You need to go back and read it again. Note carefully the names Raines, Gorelick, Dodd, and Frank. These folks are no fans of "King George" but will be tight with Obama! and his friends. Both political parties are deeply morally compromised. I have sadly concluded that Bush 41 and Bush 43 are both RINOS.

  • The Two-Ton Wall Street Conflict of Interest Few Dare To Talk About
User 10 and others seem to be drinking the fermented Koolaid and smoking Gainesville Green. I suggest they post on this site in about one year after the anticipated coronation of the Anointed One. By the way, I am no fan of George Bush.

  • Obama Is Bad for the Economy - Barron's
I believe Proud Alien is seeing the problem narrowly. BOTh political parties have been seduced by the corrupt environment in Washington. Of course the environment on Wall Street is no better. Imagine a well known "Investment Bank" creating a fictitious "silver deposit" and not only selling shares to investors, but having the chutzpah to charge "storage fees" on a non-existent hoard of silver. The Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac scandals have involved many Democrats (Chris Dodd, anyone?) as well as Republicans. It is astounding that a GSE could spend MILLIONS to lobby Congress while tapping the Federal til. The present "leadership" and membership of Congress will continue the same policies that have carried us to the brink of disaster.

  • The 3 Main Reasons Behind This Recession
Dectra, you must have gotten into the fermented Koolaid. The Democrats are heavily favored to control all branches of government. As bad as Republicans have been, just wait til Pelosi,Reid, and Obama take control. The market will dive bomb the first trading day after the election. Then we will have four years of Jimmy Carter redux.

  • Who's Wrong About Inflation?
If a private individual or business were to engage in the kind of statistical manipulation the government is doing, there would be angry congressional hearings demanding the Department of Justice undertake a prosecution. I wonder if former senator John Edwards will launch a pro-bono lawsuit on behalf of all citizens accusing the government of malpractice? Don't expect future President Obama to set this right either.
