  • Gold's Not the Best Investment in Inflationary Times
I am surprised that one concept has not been used in this voluminous discussion: STAGFLATION.

  • Dow Will Equal Gold in 2009
Bigwavedave: reading history tells me that the income tax was "imposed" in 1913. This is the same year the Federal Reserve was created and U.S. Senators were elected by popular vote( instead of being chosen by the state legislatures). All three of these events have had bad consequences for the country

  • All That Gold Is Really In the Gold ETF, Right?
What troubles me about this issue is the recent allegation that a well known investment bank created a silver deposit an d not only charged for shares, but also charged for storage costs. But, it is alleged, a class action lawsuit against said investment bank( the suit alleged that their vaults were empty) resulted in an out-of-court settlement. If this is true, it does not raise my level of trust. I advocate a mandatory physical inspection by the commodity regulators.

  • Why I Got Gold Wrong
I was a child during the great depression, but my understanding was that Roosevelt seized privately held gold and raised the price of gold from $20 an ounce to $35. This effectively devalued to dollar. Gold mining stocks took off and The government "Primed the Pump" by printing money. Every economic book I have read seems to say that gold rises in price in inflation and deflation. I tends to be in the doldrums during periods of price stability.

  • Time to Buy Gold and Silver
I'm with Georealist. The Central Banks and their commercial acolytes remind me of the Wizard behind the curtain in OZ. I do believe that there is a disconnect between the "paper" precious metals market and the physical market. I have no idea when this situation could blow up but I believe it will and when it comes, it will be sudden and devastating

  • Freddie's Loss is Gold's Gain
It's not just a loss of faith in the integrity of the currency. It is also a loss of faith in the integrity of all political parties and all who would be elected politicians. Politicians use demagoguery because it works with the average voter.

  • Gold Price Conspiracy?
I tip my hat to our northern neighbor FoxV. He is a prudent and realistic person. May his tribe increase!

  • Gold Price Conspiracy?
After reading James Conrad's post on gold a few days go, I would be afraid to buy a "certificate"... indicating I owned any precious metal. That story about Morgan Stanley allegedly creating a "silver depository" and charging "storage fees" on silver that, allegedly, never existed makes me unwilling to trust ANY Wall Street name. I have junk silver in a safe deposit box and I am planning to sequester more.

  • Gold's Divergence Between the Paper and Physical Markets
I was told by a coin dealer this past Thursday that the U.S. Mint had stopped selling newly made gold coins to individuals. The Mint may still be selling to a limited number of coin dealers. This suggests that there may be a shortage of physical gold. There seems to be many confusing crosscurrents:: Milk and other foodstuffs going up, utilities going up, while certain assets, such as real estate, going down.

  • Who Is Really Printing Money?
I have to support Russ Osborn. I see the economy poised on a knife edge. Tip one way and you are in deflation. Tip another way and you have inflation. The enormous overhang of unfunded debt, mentioned by Russ, seems to me to mitigate for eventual inflation. I don't see "Mr. Market" as having a personality, but comments about the market trying to shake off weak hands seems very credible. I am quietly sticking with a modest accumulation of precious metals in funds and mining companies. Patience will be eventually rewarded.

  • Crude Oil, Gold Prices Plummet: Time to Get Cautious About Dollar Bears
I don't know if "the end is nigh", but I support gigem77's views. In 12 months, we shall know who is correct, wont we?

  • Gold Is At a Critical Juncture
I still agree with the "grassy knoll" conspiratorial crowd: there is some measure of market manipulation because Central Banks are trying to control inflation and thus keeping the peasants from departing the currency. Remember this post in about one to two years. If gold is still flat, then I will have been badly wrong.

  • Is the Price of Gold Artificially Depressed?
Methinks Lester has been drinking the fermented Koolaid. The U.S. military is badly overextended. This is why we seem to be getting ready to use only diplomatic pressure on Iran. I don't see how our being in Iraq has made the world's oil more accessible. If anything, our military presence in Iraq has made oil availability worse. Of course, the last time civilian possession of gold in the U.S. was seized was done by that nice man, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

  • Inflation Protection: Government vs. Gold
Thank you for confirming my judgement! I exited TIPS very early this year and went to USAA Precious Metals Fund. The government is monetizing all debts including foreign dollar holdings.
