Real Estate CEFs 'Crushed' YTD 2008
There is no reason to look like you've seen a ghost when you see leverage. You're not going to "get killed" just because a CEF is leveraged. Leverage magnifies the downside and the upside, that's all. If you think the underlying asset is going up, leverage is good. The banks can't force the CEFs to redeem their preferreds, although many CEFs must do so to meet assrt coverage requirements. This article should mention discounts/premiums. I'd short RFI before I'd buy it.

      Three Financial Stocks Worth Holding
BAC paid all stock for Merril, so I'm not sure how it makes sense to say they overpaid--the price has fallen 50%, like their stock.

Unless you're trying to time the absolute bottom, I don't see much point in buying these things now. They will be in a bottom-ish range for a while, so it's smart to wait for more clarity.

Merger Arbitrage: Sound Strategy for a Bear Market
GDL is a fund of merger arb plays. So it offers diversity. It's the same choice you make when choosing to pick stocks or pick a fund. It also tends to trade at a discount (like now).

      A Skeptic on Leveraged ETFs
As an investor, I'm mainly concerned with biased slippage. If the ETF underperforms in one direction but not the other, then there is a change in the risk. If the mis-performance is equally bearish and bullish, I'm not so concerned.

You can also play merger arbitrage through GDL. But, I'm not sure how much opportunity there is when there's no credit in the world.

Why do preferred shares even exist? It just seems like a way for companies to borrow money without having it show up as debt on the balance sheet.

Trading Obama: Solar Stocks, GM Debt, Ambac Calls, Lorillard and Goldman Puts
GM is not remotely close to being "America's biggest industrial enterprise." It is dwarfed by GE, for instance, on assets, market cap, or any other measure.

Forward PE's are nearly meaningless at the moment. Pay attention. If forward PE's were accurate, the market would be where it was 3 month ago.

I don't see info at that site that gives the average discount for all closed-end funds.

Not so sure about lab companies. They do a lot of employment screening ("pee tests"), and employment is very weak.

Where do you find the average discount to NAV, as mentioned here: "the share price discount to NAV for the CEF sector is -14.5%"?
