Hedge Funds May Have Gone Too Far
I think, if you look, the rule about "naked short" selling has been around since 1935. I hope to God that this little bout of market panic finally kills the Repub idea that all regulation and market oversight is BAD. Next on the list would be to kill off this insane idea of "Supply Side" (only) economics.

Cable is Cornering the Broadband Market
I'm not sure you should count the telcos out just yet. I have a feeling that many areas of the country are like my local area. I have TW cable because I have no choice...yet. Cable's infrastructure is old and showing it. The relays fail almost daily as the temperature rises to 100+ and the signal weakens as people come home requiring volume levels of 50+ or pixelation of the picture. Add in the delivered line speed of Internet bouncing like a yo-yo causing packet crashes and really if'y telephone service.
On the other hand, VZ (my local telco) has installed new fiber along the right-of way and hooked up to existing voice line boxes. This makes my phone service on VZ by far my preference. The problem with VZ is that they are dead set against running FIOS into apartment complexes, preferring to service the upper middle class housing developments. Then they complain to the local news outlets that it is having a hard time signing enough subscribers. Some day they'll figure out that real people live in those apartment blocks. I've been waiting over 1 1/2 years. It's like the telcos are run by GM management trained people.

How GM Plans to Muddle Through
If there is one automaker in the US that has the answer for the truck market & fuel economy in house it is GM. I know that management will be too stupid and far too slow, but within EMD division is the answer. For 60 years it has been increasing efficiency of fuel/weight ratios to the point where they can move 1,000 tons with 6,000 h.p. a mile on a gallon of diesel. Think what you could do with a 20 h.p. motor/generator set in a pickup.

A Long Housing Boom Won't Yield to a Brief Recovery
OK. I just don't get this article. Is it a set-up for excusing all those crooks with Ivy League MBA's? The poor baby's were just led astray by the hardened criminal element and were forced to write NINJA loans and leverage them 50x with no reserve. OR, is it that those awful people that walked into mortgage offices and forced creditors to issue subprime loans were actually in collusion with the criminal element and that is what really brought down Fannie & Freddie. Just what is the point?
SIVs CDOs, default swaps, and 100 to 1 leverage, THE PROBLEM, is the result of the idiots that have been elected in the last 20 years that think that deregulating everything and free money is a great idea (and it is for those that are crooked & greedy). These are the crooks that say FREE MARKET, NO TAXES, NO RESERVE, NO OVERSIGHT, then run with pitch forks in hand straight to those they most hate demanding no-strings-attached help.

Study Confirms Much of U.S. Labor Market 'Offshorable'
I have to read this report. My God I hope it included Congressional seats. I would like nothing better than to elect someone that is willing to work cheaply and in the public interest.

Pfizer Makes a Deal, Wyeth and Elan Release Alzheimer's Drug Results
PFE going up a nickel is like Krakatoa erupting. This stock, hence company, has only managed to perfect achieving the well funded attainment of daily, weekly, yearly, decade long lows. Are they going for a Guinness world record? Saving some dying patent for another year no longer qualifies as successful business management. IMHO

Oil Hits $140: What Could Trigger a Reverse?
      Paul Sterman,
The brokerage houses said $150 by July 4 and $200 by year end. Most everyone says these are forecasts. But unless you really believe that BRICs are ever increasing demand with the IMF stats showing world economic slowing & subsidies being withdrawn, those numbers are merely the statement of fact. Unless limits are placed on non-industrial use futures contract holdings are implemented, you've been told what the future is.

You say "I think the problem isn’t with big pharma though, I think it’s with our expectation." ....? Well, as a long term investor in PFE, I would appreciate a company that knows how to do something, anything, beside preside over a value trap that can't do any better than increase dividend yield by ever decreasing stock prices and making a new yearly low every day of the month or

The Failure of the Energy Markets
Is it true that brokerages have the same right, under CFTC rules, to hold as many contracts in commodities as they want? If this is true, then GS & LEH & others can pump & dump the market, being so small, to meet those targets that make headlines while the world is helpless. I've read this several times, but combing through the website haven't come across anything like that yet. Could one of you professionals verify or debunk this for me or would that be counter productive?

Geothermal: The Other Base Load Power
I've never found any investigation of existing geothermal sources in my home state of Texas. I heard, off-hand-thus not sure of the detail, that UGTH was exploring this option, but I've not found any information to double check. Anyone know????

I bring this up, because Texas is littered with existing deep dry wells that have down hole temperatures of 700-900F at 2k-5k feet. It just seems that steam generation or sterling technology would be reasonable.
