  • Time to Fill Up on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve
It is only a matter of time before we HAVE TO get along on a lot less oil than today. This isn't a choice. We can wait for it to happen, or we can plan ahead. Either way, it's going to be difficult. Anyone who pretends otherwise is part of the problem.

The single most effective strategy to start with is to reduce consumption, through conservation and efficiency. A gas tax (of more than 2 cents) would certainly help.

  • As Russia Tests the Waters, Oil and Gas Showdown Looms
The missile defense system is and always has been a complete waste of money. Obama should trade it (and shoving NATO right up to Russia's borders) away for something of real value to us.

  • Cheap Crude: A Flash in the (Oil) Pan
geophys: " like all governments they are not qualified to run a local Dairy Queen."
-- But it's OK to give them a trillion dollars a year (for six decades, current dollars) to fund a permanent war machine. Do they run that well? You simply parrot every stanza in the Republican hymnal.

Alex_G: " the obvious solution is to raise Federal gas and diesel taxes.
-- Europe has been doing this for decades, which is why they are so much less dependent on oil than we are. This can be made revenue-neutral as you suggest by lowering income taxes an equal amount. Way too sensible to ever happen here.

longoil: " One solution that gets little attention is conservation."
-- As the ad says, this is "the biggest no-brainer in the history of mankind." Regardless of what else we do, let's stop wasting finite resources.

CLH, you never cease to amaze me. Random noise, as usual.

Chris B: Very good point on the true full cost of energy. It might be good to think about the environmental cost along the same lines.

  • The Market's View on Oil
Although $147 oil was clearly a hot-money bubble, there is a real and growing supply-demand problem. My guess is that the producers are going to cut back at around $100 and you won't see much below that. Economic weakness may hold oil down for a while, but in the not-to-long term, energy has nowhere to go but up.

  • The Triple Play: Oil Addicts, The Credit Crunch and Deflation
36 model: "We could be independent of foriegn oil if allowed to drill in ANWR and off both coasts."

Let's see, that means we could roughly quadruple our production, producing about as much as Saudi Arabia and Russia combined. You are completely out of touch with reality.

  • The Market Domino Effect: Staying Ahead of the Curve
That yep was for wallyjm. The root of our most serious problems is overpopulation. That's always a temporary problem.
