  • Microsoft vs. the Cloud
"Microsoft just came in and picked up the desktop piece despite what some bad European Union and U.S. Department of Justice politics-based legal findings say."

Huh? The biggest monopolistic move in the last 20 years and this is your comment?

And they're still paying for their brutal anti-competitive moves.

MSFT is a shell game, collecting on a hand-cuffed stream of income that their 'partners' are trying to escape from.

  • Are Global Smartphone Sales Poised For Takeoff?
I agree w/ much in the article, but really, what would you say if you analyzed the prospects of the iPhone?

My view is the iPhone is in a category of 1 today. If the other high end mobiles are 'smartphones' then I'd call the iPhone a mobile phone platform with the potential to dominate as Windows 95 did in its heyday. We'd have to call it a 'Worldphone' or some other moniker.

Seriously, with 95% of all mobile internet traffic originating from the newly introduced iPhone, what might explain that? And what explains 3500 apps in 45 days? 100,000,000 downloaded apps?

Dean, Please do an article on the differences you note between an iPhone and a smartphone. I think it would be very informative.

  • Web Browser Wars: Google Looking Beyond Market Share
Chrome is a huge gambit for Google. Will they deliver a great product within the next year? (On the Mac and Linux, too?)

If this were Apple, we'd be confident; Google has a lot of smart people. I hope they're successful. We need another excellent powerful innovator on the Web to advance the technology and to ensure we don't have to experience a "night of the living dead" scenario w/ msft technoshit.

  • Google Outed as Anonymous eBay Critic
    Get over it.

In the big scheme of things, this not that 'evil'; embarrassing yes, but evil no.

In the adult world this is called being 'diplomatic'. You don't want to throw lye in their eyes by signing your name, but you do have an opinion you want aired.

Evil is what msft did to IBM's OS/2, Apple's Mac OS, Netscape, and several other trusting groups back in the good old days before they were convicted of thuggery.

Remember, it was a msft exec who said (in a moment of candor) to a dead opponent, 'You had a great product and strategy. The only thing you did wrong was to trust us!"

Now, that's evil. MSFT wins in a slam dunk!

  • Seven Reasons for Enterprises to Follow the Microsoft/Google Battle
    Dana,

I think Apple and it's close friendship w/ Google will also be very much a partner/challenge to MSFT. Apple's licensing of MSFT's Exchange Srvcs will benefit both companies, but the iPhone, the smallest Trojan Horse ever, will also be the most powerful Trojan Horse, ever!

The timing of the Plays for Sure, Vista, and Zune failures couldn't have been worse. Apple is transcendent and MSFT is sucking wind.

The challenges MSFT faces are enormous; they really need to circle their wagons because the Vista failure is incredibly damaging and, also, many developers are wary of them, remembering MSFT as the raider/pillager from the north who, all too often, 'cut off the air supply' of too many creative and promising developers.

  • Apple, Microsoft Run for the Clouds in the New Client Software War
Seems to me, most of what you say about the cloud having primacy is very much accurate.

I quibble w/ your comments burying Apple's substantial ability to create the future of physical devices. I believe Apple's market cap will be boosted significantly because they do creatIvely LEAD the future of fashion in technology and this is no small feat. They also will continue to LEAD in creating trustworthy security on desktops and in pockets. Again, not a small feat.

Since they are not asleep to the opportunity of the cloud: The explosive introduction of the iPhone along w/ accelerating strong growth of the Mac mkt and the importance of the iPhone SDK /w iTunes leads me to believe that Apple will be trading between $400 and $800 by Jan 2010.

  • Microsoft Adopts Adobe Flash; Scores Touchdown Against Apple
    Ashkan,

I'm not sure this is a TD for MSFT. It might be one for AAPL. I think Jobs is signaling Adobe he wants a major FL upgrade - higher quality, faster, more reliable.

Apple would be very happy to have an excellent FL running on its phone and Jobs is angling for that.

  • Opening up: Has Microsoft Saved Itself or Shot Itself in the Foot?
    Dana,

Is this still operative for you? (See SDK announcements made after this post of yours.)

  • Google, Apple, Research in Motion and Amazon: Are "The Four Horsemen" Overvalued?
    Toro,

What happens to aapl's earnings if the iPhone rollout exceeds the iPod juggernaut? Your consensus estimates for 08 and 10 do not include the growing understanding that aapl will ship 40+ million iPhones in 2009 with 60+ mil to follow in 2010!

And with each iPhone subscriber, we have new estimates that PROFIT per subscriber will be near $216/yr!

I adjust your projected earnings growth numbers to:

    2008 - $4.73 ===> 6.00
    2010 - $7.46 ===> 12.00

Although the iPhone may not prove the juggernaut some think it will be, the impact on the bottom line is incredible, yes?

The prudent investor would run the numbers under two scenarios: juggernaut vs "also ran" AND then watch iPhone developments VERY closely.
