  • Homemade Hedge Funds: Don't Try This At Home
Passive approaches have turned 70-80% of the "Ivy Leagued" CFA money managers into underperformers. During 2007 alone, 130/30 funds and enhanced long equity funds underperformed the index, while charging close to 1.3% yearly for that. So yes, many people love to hear "hedgefund" since the dream for alpha is basically the American dream.

  • Global Valuations: A Terrific Resource
Interestingly in these wonderful charts - you forgot most of Eastern Europe (is that maybe under Emerging Europe?). And that "missing sector" accounts for close to 60% of the growth that Europe has experienced in the past 5 years. Altough not documented, Western Europe benefited handsomely. (simlarly to Germany benefiting from US investments after the World War 2.) I would reccomend the readers taking a look at Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Croatia, Russia, even Turkey since these coutrnies still have cheap labor costs and ever-growing economies.

I love your writing. But on one point above you are very wrong, and any firm that agrees with this conlcusion is going to miss a big market opportunity. Still, Tim I appreciate your effort and hope to read many more in the upcoming year.

  • An ETF Rebalance For the New Year
Gary thanks for the article. However, in my modest opinion #1 - the foreign fixed income ETFs will not shine in performance terms, but in net inflows terms. Meaning investors will buy it, but compared to say Russian Equity ETF, they will not be rewarded with attractive performance. Anyways, great job and for those interested in international fixed income - here is the bible... www.seekingalpha.com/a...

  • Investing in International Bond Funds
Thanks for the note, it is not TIPS product in a factual sense, but it contains governmental debt securities which are similar to TIPS and which the American public needs a proxy to associate with.
