  • The 'Reflation' Top Ten Portfolio
The reason so many are attracted to the 'buy' side of a short position vehicle is due to the strictures of custodial accounts. They cannot go short uncovered.

  • ConocoPhillips: More Than Just a Great Stock
Political risk ignored, the mark to market of the Lukoil stake is of no concern unless immediate liquidation were needed to service debt due to declining revenues. Clearly, debt is the relevant variable in comparison to the other two. A safer way to go might be to play the diminishing spread of the laggard with an average of the relative out performers.

  • Crudomania Is Over
As usual, we have pompous 'projections' for economic, political and societal trends extending to near infinity or at least 'terminal event' based on the last ten minutes of experience.

  • Still Blaming the Market Victims
I'm a home owner since before my family's formation. However, house 'ownership' and pride in same does not have the universal cultural priority that I've assigned for myself and heirs. Many, the world over, do not equate a free standing owned/financed structure with a home. In the USA, house ownership has never been their goal; these folks are not necessarily nor even likely proflgate fools. Let's not confuse sound finances and sound families with societal cheerleading that can, and demonstrably has, contributed to individual and societal misallocation of resources.

  • Obama's Plan to Double Energy Production
This doubling, are we talking geologic time? Let's hope we don't have to end up wishing for a Hidden Valley Ranch for our latest leader. One thing for sure, our new leader will give excellent addresses, far surpassing anything FDR ever approached.

  • Exxon Apostasy: A Closer Look at the Oil Giant's Real Valuation
Many of the same dog in the manger analysts trashing XOM for not joining the feeding frenzy in assets during the bubble will now decry their investment in same during these 'bad' times for oil & gas.

  • MLPs: Past, Present and Future
The nature of the energy MLP requires access to capital if it is to grow. However an MLP doesn't have to grow to be attractive to certain sectors of the investing public, once expected revenue is reasonably predictable.

  • Riskier Sector ETFs Improve; Investors Now Betting on Economic Recovery
I think post #1 is saying (I'm 'channelling') is that the union ethos (obviously with compliant shortsighted management) made successful dermands that overran the ability of the underlying business to sustain them. Guessing the implication intended is that they (captial, management and labor) priced themselves out of the market by ignoring economics. I don't maintain that position as necessary and sufficient for the result apparent.

  • Don't Be Scammed by Madoff Investor Sob Stories
I'm sure there are many "non-" and "pseudo-" sophisticates yet far from venal who were gutted in the debacle. However, for those whose myopia caused them to be the "Judas Goat" for so many, it boggles the mind that they could still enable the alchemist in possession of the "Philosophers' Stone."

  • Cleantech's Solar Conundrum
"Pilot plants and research funding certainly but don't expect money to help raise capital for IPOs." Perhaps not, but in the brave new world of the spreading of wealth and capital with governmental capitalization triage who knows what wonders will come to pass.

  • Environmentalism May Face Major Setback in 2009
A sound commentary on the potential for backsliding in the environmental sustainability front. Those benighted souls freezing in the dark don't realize that those of us who are wiser and warmer have their interests at heart.
