CEF Yields May Indicate a Further 20% Drop in Prices
Agree that income-only yield is the right metric. Is there a readily available, downloadable, and preferably reliable source of this info for CEFs?

Follow up: I see CLF closed under $40 yesterday amid the wreckage. That puts it's fwd PE under 3. WTF?

WLT has a leverage ratio over 6, D/E >3. Wouldn't touch it in this climate.

MEE ripped for 15% so far today (-6 @ $33.70) -- imagine if the bailout talks had stalled! Do hedge funds have any more short positions to be squeezed?

I guess the prospect of President Obama is why CLF is dropping faster than the rest of the rocks this morning.

Bailout Should Be A Windfall For Taxpayers - Barron's
Housing bubble due to excess liquidity (and a systemic problem that temporarily was rewarding greed and punishing prudence). Drops of 30% are NOT the problem, it was the excess rise of %30.

Now we have a sea of debt instruments of uncertain value that are an accounting nightmare, bringing major institutions to their knees. It makes sense to me to create a market for the questionable debt BUT
      1. it is not a panacea
      2. the current administration is incompetent at best and corrupt to the core at worst

I would prefer to change the accounting rules for the duration of the crisis (i.e. suspend mark to market for illiquid assets, suspend short selling -- isn't that why God gave us put options anyway?), and reinject capital where needed on Buffet-like terms.

Lots of babies being tossed out with the toxic waste water lately. It's like the whole market has been turned input call options. Some are going to pay off handsomely, some will spiral into the enormous black hole at the center of our economy.

jimmy, how do you know only cheaper houses are selling? ahhh, because HALF ARE FORECLOSURES and we know they're concentrated in the lower end (aka subprime) market.

I'd call that cold comfort indeed.

Harbinger Capital: Ashland Stake and Performance Update
CLF projected earnings of $40/sh over next 3 years, closed today around $65 (down another $3 with the DJI rising nearly 300). It's forward PE is around 4, reported blowout results July 31, and earnings estimates are being raised sharply.

Does anyone else smell a rat? A short-selling rat?
